Hi everyone! My name is Chelsea Mumford. I live in San Diego,CA and I have a brother who is 17 years old. He has Fragile X and he's non verbal (he does use ASL) . Most of the siblings I've met don't have a non verbal brother or sister and I was wondering if anybody else does? |

I know I am on the siblings thread but just so you don't feel too alone my 11 year old is non verbal. We are teaching him ASL but it is tough, he is so hyper that it is hard to get him to pay attention! Good luck Maria |

Hi, My name is Donita and I have a brother that is 46 years old. He is mostly non-verbal but does have some words he uses. He has learned some ASL in the last 14 years that do help some but not enough so that he can carry on a conversation with you. He will usually repeat the last word or 2 of the last sentence you say. He does seem to be able to follow a conversation but just not respond verbally to it. I am 47 years old so my brother and I have been around each other for many years. I moved away from home when I was 17 and later married and had 3 children. We only live about 3 miles from my mother and brother so I see him quite often. Sometimes he is glad to see me other times not! He likes to come over to my house when my mom goes shopping, when she comes to get him he usually isn't ready to go home. He loves for you to read books to him and he has his favorites that have been read to him over and over but he really like to hear us read. |

Reply with quote | #5 | My younger brother Scott is nonverbal. My parents and I can figure out what he means the majority of the time, but I don't think frustrating can even cover how we feel when we can't. He's 25 now (I'm 27) and I still imagine what it would be like to have him just say hi. I'm around if anyone wants to chat too. |
